A Girl Like Me

From HitStory, the pop encyclopedia of School of Rock · Album

A Girl Like Me · Rihanna's second album was released in April 2006, less than eight months after her debut. She worked again with Evan Rogers and Carl Sturken, and also with Stargate, J. R. Rotem and Ne-Yo, a label mate. The title fits the plan to sing in a more personal way, about things that girls of her age go through. S.O.S. was the first song to be recorded, in three days. It was originally intended for Christina Milian, who turned it down.

The album keeps the dancehall and reggae of the debut and adds ballads and a little rock. S.O.S. uses the bass line and the beat of Tainted Love by Soft Cell. Unfaithful, written by Ne-Yo, tells of a relationship falling apart, with piano and strings. Break It Off is a duet with Sean Paul. Critics felt that she gracefully avoided the second-album slump. S.O.S. became her first number one on the American chart.
