Music of the Sun

From HitStory, the pop encyclopedia of School of Rock · Work

Music of the Sun · In 2003 Rihanna was discovered in Barbados by producer Evan Rogers, who took her to New York to record demos. She did so in fits and starts, because she could only work during school holidays. Jay-Z, who had just become head of Def Jam, heard the demo with Pon de Replay and had her audition. She signed a contract that same day. The debut album was released in August 2005, produced by, among others, Rogers and Carl Sturken, Poke and Tone and Stargate.

The title refers to the Caribbean culture she comes from. The album mixes dance pop, dancehall and R&B, with guests such as Kardinal Offishall, J-Status and Vybz Kartel. Pon de Replay became a big club hit. The Last Time is a quiet song on acoustic guitar. The reviews were mixed: some praised the dancehall, others found the production somewhat generic.

Listening

Listening tip. Listen to Pon de Replay and notice the dancehall beat and the way she sings, with a rhythm reminiscent of reggae. Then compare that with The Last Time, which is carried mainly by guitar.
