Richard P. Havens, 1983
From HitStory, the pop encyclopedia of School of Rock · Work
Richard P. Havens, 1983 · This double album from 1968 combines studio recordings with live material from a concert in July 1968. It is a concept album, and it was the first time Richie Havens co-produced himself, alongside Elliott Mazer and Mark Roth. According to Mazer, he made up his own chords, which made it difficult for the many musicians. The title refers to Nineteen Eighty-Four by George Orwell: according to him there was still time, but not much.
The record mixes original work with covers, including songs by the Beatles and Bob Dylan, which he made into his own songs. The music touches on folk rock, world music and folk blues. Indian Rope Man became a well-known song, often covered and returning as African Herbsman. The album reached number 80 on the Billboard chart and received good reviews. One reviewer found it a little too long for a double album.
