Genius + Soul = Jazz

From HitStory, the pop encyclopedia of School of Rock · Work

Genius + Soul = Jazz was recorded in two sessions on 26 and 27 December 1960 at Van Gelder Studio and released in 1961 on the label Impulse! Quincy Jones and Ralph Burns wrote the big band arrangements. The singer plays Hammond B3 organ on all the tracks. He was accompanied by two groups, one made up of members of the Count Basie Band and one of top players from the New York studio world.

The album reached number four in the American chart and stayed there for forty-eight weeks. The Encyclopedia of Albums singles out One Mint Julep: here the singer lets the musicians do the work while he plays the organ. In 2000 the album was voted number 360 in Colin Larkin's list of the best albums, and in 2011 it entered the Grammy Hall of Fame.

Listening tip. Listen to One Mint Julep and notice how the organ carries the songs while the band is given room to solo.
