What’d I Say

From HitStory, the pop encyclopedia of School of Rock · Work

What’d I Say · What'd I Say was released in late 1959 on Atlantic Records. It was really more of a compilation than a self-contained album: the songs had previously been released as singles and had not yet appeared on an album. The oldest, Roll with My Baby, dates from 1952, Jumpin' in the Mornin' from 1953. It also contains singles from 1958 and 1959.

The title track was the singer's first top ten hit. The album became his first gold record. A Billboard reviewer called it a fine, swinging album on which he is at his best. In September 1961 it entered the American album chart and reached number twenty. The critic Robert Christgau included it in his Basic Record Library of records from the fifties and sixties.
