Rocket to Russia

From HitStory, the pop encyclopedia of School of Rock · Work

Rocket to Russia · In the summer of 1977 punk was at its peak: the first groups from the New York underground were getting record deals. The Ramones then released Sheena Is a Punk Rocker. Sire gave the band between 25,000 and 30,000 dollars, far more than before, and that money went mainly into the production. Recording began on 21 August at Mediasound Studios in Manhattan, a former church. Usually the first take was used. Johnny Ramone wanted to sound better than the Sex Pistols.

The sound has more surf rock than before, many songs are short and simply built, and almost all the lyrics are funny. It was the last record with drummer Tommy Ramone. Critics appreciated the more mature production. Sales were disappointing: the album got no further than number 49 on the Billboard 200.
