Pablo Honey

From HitStory, the pop encyclopedia of School of Rock · Work

Pablo Honey · Radiohead recorded their debut album in 1992 at Chipping Norton Recording Studios in Oxfordshire, in three weeks. The managers wanted to conquer the American market and therefore chose the American producers Sean Slade and Paul Q. Kolderie. The band had little studio experience and wanted to squeeze every idea from twenty years of listening into a single record. Guitars were layered several times over one another to create a thick wall of sound. The title comes from a prank call by the Jerky Boys.

The song Creep began as an afterthought, until the producers heard it. It has a quiet verse and a loud chorus with bursts of guitar noise. At first the single made little impression, but via radio in Israel and America it grew into a hit, and in 1993 it reached number 7 in Britain. Reviewers were generally positive, although some found the album unfinished. The band members themselves are critical of it.

Listening

Listening tip. Listen to Creep and notice the difference between the quiet verse and the loud chorus. Hear how the guitar breaks loose in bursts in the chorus.
