The Bends
From HitStory, the pop encyclopedia of School of Rock · Work
The Bends · After the hit Creep, Radiohead felt a great deal of pressure, and singer Thom Yorke fell ill after the world tour. Even so, he went on to write new songs that guitarist Ed O'Brien thought much better than the debut Pablo Honey. The band chose John Leckie as producer. Recording began in February 1994 at RAK Studios in London and progressed slowly, with pressure from the label. It was the first album with Nigel Godrich and the artist Stanley Donwood. The three guitarists were now given separate roles.
The Bends was released on 13 March 1995 on Parlophone and combines guitar songs and ballads, with more restrained arrangements and more cryptic lyrics than the debut. Singles included My Iron Lung, Fake Plastic Trees, Just and Street Spirit (Fade Out), the band's first top-five hit in England. The album reached number four in the British chart and made the band more than a one-hit wonder. It influenced later bands such as Coldplay, Muse and Travis.
