A Salty Dog
From HitStory, the pop encyclopedia of School of Rock · Work
A Salty Dog · This third album by Procol Harum was recorded in March 1969 and came out that same year. It has a nautical theme; the cover resembles the Player's Navy Cut packet. Matthew Fisher produced the album, his first time, and left the band shortly afterwards. It was also the last record with bassist Dave Knights. Musical tensions began to grow between guitarist Robin Trower and the rest of the group, as Crucifiction Lane shows, a track with a rare vocal part by Trower.
The record is more varied than its two predecessors, with rock, blues and pop. The title song is the band's first track with an orchestra, and the piano riff at the beginning was inspired by a train whistle that Gary Brooker heard in Switzerland. The song reached number 44 on the British chart and the album number 27. Rolling Stone found it confusing, Robert Christgau gave it an A+.
