Wind of Change

From HitStory, the pop encyclopedia of School of Rock · Work

Wind of Change · In 1971 Peter Frampton left Humble Pie. His first solo album, released by A&M in 1972, he produced himself together with the engineer Chris Kimsey, who had previously worked on a Humble Pie album. Together they gave the music a more melodic character than that band's raw boogie, with an emphasis on acoustic guitar playing. Many songs rest on acoustic guitars, but It's a Plain Shame and All I Want To Be (Is By Your Side) have a hard rock edge.

The most striking guest list consisted of Ringo Starr, Billy Preston and Klaus Voormann, supplemented by Mick Jones and Mike Kellie of Spooky Tooth and Andy Bown. The Rolling Stones' Jumpin' Jack Flash is the only extended cover and the only track that Frampton did not write himself. The horn arrangements on it and on The Lodger, by Jim Price, recall the Stones' Bitch, on which Price had worked the year before. Kimsey would go on working on Frampton's albums throughout the 1970s.

Listening

Listening tip. Listen to Jumpin' Jack Flash and notice the horns, which sound like those on the Rolling Stones' Bitch. Compare that with the acoustic guitar in Wind of Change.
