Who Came First
From HitStory, the pop encyclopedia of School of Rock · Work
Who Came First from 1972 is Pete Townshend's first solo album. It grew out of two earlier tributes to his guru Meher Baba, Happy Birthday and I Am, which had been distributed in small editions. Because poor copies were circulating as bootlegs in the United States, Decca asked for an official release. He chose to change the track list considerably. He included three demos from The Who's abandoned Lifehouse project, such as Pure and Easy and Let's See Action, plus tracks from the two earlier albums and two new songs. He recorded everything in his home studio, one of the most advanced home studios in England, and played almost everything himself.
The cover shows him standing on eggs, a nod to the question of which came first, the chicken or the egg. The album reached number 30 in the United Kingdom and number 69 in the United States.
