Rough Mix

From HitStory, the pop encyclopedia of School of Rock · Work

After the last show with Keith Moon in October 1976, The Who took a break. Ronnie Lane, the former bassist of Small Faces and Faces, asked Pete Townshend to produce his new album, but it became a full collaboration. The guitarist did not want to write together. Only the instrumental Rough Mix is credited to both names. During the recording sessions Lane was diagnosed with multiple sclerosis, although the outside world did not know it. The album was released in September 1977.

The songs resemble The Who or Faces less and the British folk rock of the early 1970s more. On Annie, Lane's band Slim Chance plays. John Entwistle, Ian Stewart, Charlie Watts and Eric Clapton also contributed. Robert Christgau called Annie a modest folk classic and praised three of the guitarist's contributions as his sharpest in years.

Listening

Listening tip. Listen to Annie and notice the folk-rock style of the band Slim Chance, who play on it themselves.
