Empty Glass
From HitStory, the pop encyclopedia of School of Rock · Work
Empty Glass came out on 21 April 1980 and was Pete Townshend's third solo album, the first consisting solely of new material of his own. He wrote about what preoccupied him: alcohol, drugs, marital problems and dead friends, above all Keith Moon, the drummer of The Who. The title comes from an image by the poet Hafez, in which you offer God an empty cup because your heart must not be full of something else.
He began the songs at home in late 1978 and recorded them from November 1979 at Wessex Studios in London, under producer Chris Thomas. Townshend played all the guitar and synthesizer himself. Let My Love Open the Door became a top ten hit in the United States. Critics called the record a Who album that was never made.
