Wild Wood
From HitStory, the pop encyclopedia of School of Rock · Work
Wild Wood is Paul Weller's second solo album and was released in September 1993. Weller played guitar himself and also played all kinds of keyboards, such as Mellotron, Minimoog and Hammond organ, alongside a band including bassist Marco Nelson and drummer Steve White. The album contains four British hits: Wild Wood, Sunflower, The Weaver and Hung Up, and reached number 2 on the album chart.
The music sounds nostalgic and received enthusiastic reviews. One reviewer heard a blend of the raw energy of The Jam and the refinement of The Style Council. AllMusic called it Weller's first real masterpiece since The Jam, and others later pointed to the renewed confidence in his guitar playing. According to Uncut, the nostalgic mood touched both old Jam fans and young bands such as Blur and Oasis. The album is seen as a turning point for British rock at the start of Britpop.
