Stanley Road

From HitStory, the pop encyclopedia of School of Rock · Work

Stanley Road is Paul Weller's third solo album and was released on 15 May 1995 on Go! Discs. The title refers to the street in Woking where he grew up. Brendan Lynch, who had also produced the two previous solo albums, was co-producer. Noel Gallagher of Oasis plays acoustic guitar on I Walk on Gilded Splinters, Steve Winwood plays on Woodcutter's Son and Pink on White Walls, and old comrades such as Steve Cradock and Steve White are there too. The cover collage is by Peter Blake, co-designer of the Sgt Pepper cover.

Critical reception was mixed. NME found the record stubbornly retro and straightforward, with just enough bite. Rolling Stone saw in it a link between generations of British rock and soul, with funky grooves, but thought some of the bombast overdone. In 1998 readers of Q voted the album number 46 of the greatest of all time.
