Heavy Soul

From HitStory, the pop encyclopedia of School of Rock · Work

Heavy Soul is Paul Weller's fourth solo album and was released on 23 June 1997. He sings and plays guitar, with Marco Nelson on bass guitar and Steve White on drums. Steve Cradock, Brendan Lynch and Jools Holland play on a few tracks. Unusual instruments are also heard on the record, such as tambura, zither, vibraphone, sitar and ukulele.

The reviews were largely favourable. In the week of release the album sold enough to reach number one, but it lost that position because of a technicality: it came with five postcards, whereas the Chart Supervisory Committee allows a maximum of four. Island Records and Independiente removed one card from every copy. On 29 June the record entered at number two.

Listening

Listening tip. Listen to Up in Suzes' Room and try to pick out the zither and the ukulele among the rest of the band.
