Paul Chambers Quintet

From HitStory, the pop encyclopedia of School of Rock · Work

Paul Chambers Quintet · This fourth album by bassist Paul Chambers was recorded on 19 May 1957 and not released until April 1958, by Blue Note Records. Alfred Lion produced and Rudy Van Gelder recorded it. Chambers played with trumpeter Donald Byrd, tenor saxophonist Clifford Jordan, pianist Tommy Flanagan and drummer Elvin Jones, all still at the start of their careers.

The repertoire consists of original pieces and standards. Benny Golson's Minor Run Down opens, Four Strings also comes from Golson, and What's New? is a well-known song by Johnny Burke and Bob Haggart. Softly, As in a Morning Sunrise is the shortest track and is played without trumpet and tenor sax. The AllMusic reviewer did not find the record particularly innovative, but heard a great deal of playfulness and quiet craftsmanship.

Listening

Listening tip. Listen to Softly, As in a Morning Sunrise. Only the rhythm section and the piano play here, so you can clearly hear how the bass carries the rhythm.
