Bass on Top
From HitStory, the pop encyclopedia of School of Rock · Work
Bass on Top is an album by the Paul Chambers Quartet, recorded on 14 July 1957 and released later that year by Blue Note. Double bassist Paul Chambers plays here in a quartet with guitarist Kenny Burrell, pianist Hank Jones and drummer Art Taylor. Alfred Lion produced, and Rudy Van Gelder recorded and mastered it.
The title makes clear that the bass takes the leading role here, rather than staying in the background. The repertoire consists of jazz standards such as Yesterdays, You'd Be So Nice to Come Home To and Dear Old Stockholm, supplemented by Chasin' the Bird, The Theme and Confessin'. Stephen Thomas Erlewine called the result on Allmusic a warm, entertaining collection of mainstream jazz that rewards close listening even more.
