Ramblin’

From HitStory, the pop encyclopedia of School of Rock · Work

Ramblin’ · Ramblin' is an album by the pianist Paul Bley, recorded in Italy in 1966 and released on the French label BYG Actuel. Bley plays in a trio with bassist Mark Levinson and drummer Barry Altschul. The repertoire consists of pieces by Annette Peacock, Carla Bley and Ornette Coleman, supplemented by Bley's own Mazatalon. The title song is by Coleman.

AllMusic gave the album four stars. According to the reviewer, the record comes from an adventurous period, when Bley was associated with the avant-garde side of jazz. His playing here often has an appealingly aggressive edge, which he would temper in later years.

Listening

Listening tip. In Both, listen to the piano and notice how fiercely and directly Bley plays his lines.
