Funkentelechy vs. the Placebo Syndrome

From HitStory, the pop encyclopedia of School of Rock · Work

Funkentelechy vs. the Placebo Syndrome · This sixth studio album by Parliament was released on 28 November 1977 on Casablanca. It is a loose concept album within the mythology of P-Funk. In it, bandleader George Clinton warns against the Placebo Syndrome, which for him meant consumerism and disco, in his view a cheap, commercial version of funk. Clinton produced the album himself. The first vinyl pressing came with a large poster of the character Sir Nose D'Voidoffunk and an eight-page comic book explaining the story.

The biggest hit was Flash Light, a number one on the R&B chart with a striking bass line played by keyboardist Bernie Worrell on a Minimoog. In Sir Nose D Voidoffunk, nursery rhymes such as Baa, Baa, Black Sheep are rewritten with lyrics about drug use. The album became the group's fourth consecutive gold record.

Listening

Listening tip. Listen to Flash Light and follow the bass line that Bernie Worrell plays on a synthesizer. Notice how that single sound carries the whole song.
