The Soul Album
From HitStory, the pop encyclopedia of School of Rock · Work
The Soul Album was released in April 1966 and is Otis Redding's fourth studio album. It came after Otis Blue, whose sleeve had still concealed the singer's origins. Now there was a portrait of an African American woman in a headscarf, in full colour.
The record contains original songs and arrangements of songs by Sam Cooke, Eddie Floyd, Roy Head and Smokey Robinson. Guitarist Steve Cropper played and is credited as co-writer on three songs. Others heard include Booker T. Jones, Isaac Hayes, bassist Donald Dunn and drummer Al Jackson Jr. A reviewer at AllMusic felt that Redding remade the songs so that they were no longer covers but interpretations of his own. He called Cigarettes and Coffee the jewel of an underrated record.
