King & Queen
From HitStory, the pop encyclopedia of School of Rock · Work
King & Queen · Producer Jim Stewart came up with this duet album. He thought that the roughness of Otis Redding and the refinement of Carla Thomas would go well together. He also looked at Marvin Gaye, who had had success with his duets. Redding agreed: Thomas, after all, also came from Memphis. They recorded the record in January 1967, while Thomas was studying for a master's degree in English at Howard University.
The work went quickly, in six days or perhaps only three. Booker T. & the M.G.'s, Isaac Hayes and the Memphis Horns played. Ten songs are covers of soul classics; Ooh Carla, Ooh Otis was written by Redding together with Al Bell. Tramp and Knock On Wood became hits. King & Queen became Redding's last studio album before his death in December 1967. Later reviewers praised the chemistry between the two singers and the light, humorous character of the record.
