Dazzle Ships
From HitStory, the pop encyclopedia of School of Rock · Work
Dazzle Ships · After the successful Architecture & Morality from 1981, Paul Humphreys and Andy McCluskey had actually wanted to disband OMD. Virgin Records, which had taken over the contract, wanted a copy of that record, but that drove the group in a different direction. They worked in their own Gramophone Suite in Liverpool, with the E-mu Emulator, and later with producer Rhett Davies in Chertsey. The album was released on 4 March 1983.
The record is experimental: sound collages in the style of musique concrète and recordings of shortwave radio about the Cold War and the Eastern Bloc. Radio Prague contains the interval signal of Czechoslovak radio. Time Zones is a montage of speaking clocks from all over the world. Genetic Engineering and Telegraph became singles. The reviews were at first largely negative and the record was regarded as a commercial flop, even though it reached the British top five. Later it grew into a cult classic, praised as an album that was ahead of its time.
