Ghosts I–IV

From HitStory, the pop encyclopedia of School of Rock · Work

Ghosts I–IV · After the tour for Year Zero and his departure from Interscope, Trent Reznor began an experiment in 2007: ten weeks, no fixed plan, everything on impulse. Together with Atticus Ross and Alan Moulder he improvised, helped by Alessandro Cortini, Adrian Belew and drummer Brian Viglione, among others, who built a drum kit out of a rubbish bin, water jugs and a frying pan. It began as an EP of five tracks and became four EPs with thirty-six pieces in all, untitled and almost without vocals. Reznor called it a soundtrack for daydreams.

The album was released in 2008 almost without announcement on Nine Inch Nails' own website, in varying packages and prices. The first nine pieces were free. It was released under a Creative Commons licence. Critics compared the atmosphere to Brian Eno and Robert Fripp. The album was praised for its spirit of experiment and its unusual release and was nominated for a Grammy.

Listening

Listening tip. Listen to track 19, Ghosts III, on which Viglione plays his home-built percussion. Try to hear which sounds seem to come from everyday objects.
