Century Child

From HitStory, the pop encyclopedia of School of Rock · Work

Century Child was released in 2002 and is the fourth album by the Finnish band Nightwish. It was the first album with bassist and singer Marko Hietala, who added a male voice to the band alongside the female singer. Also new was the contribution of a real symphony orchestra and a choir. With that the band moved from power metal to a gothic and symphonic sound, with more of a film soundtrack about it.

Keyboardist and songwriter Tuomas Holopainen said that almost all the lyrics were about childhood and the loss of innocence. According to him it is not a concept album, but the themes ran together by themselves. Bless the Child opens the record, End of All Hope and Dead to the World are personal songs about a difficult period in his life. In Finland the album went double platinum.
