Wishmaster

From HitStory, the pop encyclopedia of School of Rock · Work

Wishmaster is the third studio album by the Finnish symphonic metal band. It was released on 8 May 2000 on Spinefarm. Writing and recording went quickly and without fuss, unlike with Oceanborn. Composer Tuomas Holopainen thought it the most detached and least personal album of the band. It came out a few days early, because the music had leaked onto the internet.

The sound continues the bombastic symphonic power metal of Oceanborn, with more emphasis on atmosphere and melody than on speed and heaviness. The fantasy theme is even clearer. There are calmer songs such as Two for Tragedy and Dead Boy's Poem, and a grand piece such as FantasMic. The Kinslayer is about the victims of the shooting at Columbine High School. The album went to number one in Finland.

Listening

Listening tip. Listen to Dead Boy's Poem, one of the slower songs, and notice how atmosphere and melody take the place of speed.
