Labour of Lust

From HitStory, the pop encyclopedia of School of Rock · Work

Labour of Lust was released in 1979 on Radar Records in England and on Columbia in the United States. Nick Lowe produced it himself. The album was recorded and released at the same time as Dave Edmunds's Repeat When Necessary and has the same Rockpile line-up: Edmunds and Billy Bremner on guitar and Terry Williams on drums. The opener Cruel to Be Kind became Lowe's only big hit in America.

The American release had a different track list. Endless Grey Ribbon was dropped and American Squirm, the British single, was added. On that song Elvis Costello and two members of The Attractions sing and play. Barney Bubbles, who also worked for Costello and Ian Dury, designed the sleeve. The New York Times called it one of the most exuberant and carefully made rock albums of 1979, and The Globe and Mail compared Lowe's feel for arrangements to that of Phil Spector.
