Nick the Knife

From HitStory, the pop encyclopedia of School of Rock · Work

Nick the Knife from 1982 is Nick Lowe's third solo album and his first since the break-up of his band Rockpile in 1981. There are still ties to that group: Billy Bremner and Terry Williams play on it, and Heart is a slower version of a Rockpile song that Bremner sang on Seconds of Pleasure.

It is one of only two solo albums without covers: everything was written or co-written by him. Joyce Millman of The Boston Phoenix found him unusually gloomy, on the first album without his old friend Dave Edmunds. He no longer sings his love songs from the safety of the group. The album reached number 50 on the Billboard 200 and number 99 in Britain. In Canada, Stick It Where the Sun Don't Shine made the top 40.

Listening

Listening tip. Listen to Heart and note how this song sounds slower than the Rockpile original. Notice what that does to the mood.
