Your Funeral… My Trial

From HitStory, the pop encyclopedia of School of Rock · Work

Your Funeral… My Trial · This fourth album by Nick Cave and the Bad Seeds was released on 3 November 1986 on Mute Records, initially as a double EP. The singer was deep in a heroin addiction at the time, and you can hear that in the melancholy, despairing atmosphere. Producer Flood told of the first day of recording: Mick Harvey came with the inside of an old grand piano, just the strings on a metal frame. He tuned a few notes and plucked them with a plectrum. That is how The Carny came about, and it set the tone for the whole record.

According to Harvey, the album gave the band a template to carry on with: it was organised rather than messy and sounded like their own. The singer later called it his favourite album. In 1987 the group played The Carny in Wim Wenders's film Der Himmel über Berlin. The record topped the British independent albums chart.

Listening

Listening tip. Listen to The Carny and notice the peculiar little piano sound from which the song is built. It came from the strings of an old grand piano.
