Kicking Against the Pricks
From HitStory, the pop encyclopedia of School of Rock · Work
Kicking Against the Pricks · The third album by Nick Cave and the Bad Seeds consists entirely of covers. Cave and the band tried out a list of songs, including by bands such as The Loved Ones and The Saints, which in the end did not make the album. The choice always had a different reason. Sleeping Annaleah was a tribute to Tom Jones, with other songs he felt they had never been performed properly, and The Carnival Is Over had haunted his youth. The title comes from the Bible, from Acts 26.
Drummer Thomas Wydler played for the first time, so that the line-up consisted of five men. Mick Harvey wrote the string arrangements, which a Berlin ensemble played. Cave later played the album down, but said that it helped the band to play different kinds of music successfully, which benefited later records. The review in Spin was scathing and spoke of a smug lump.
