The Firstborn Is Dead

From HitStory, the pop encyclopedia of School of Rock · Work

The Firstborn Is Dead is the second album by Nick Cave and the Bad Seeds. It was released on 3 June 1985 on Mute Records and was produced by the band and Flood. The recording took place at Hansa Studios in Berlin. Cave later said that the city gave them the freedom to do anything, whereas in London, as Australians, they were quickly reined in.

The title refers to Jesse Garon Presley, Elvis's stillborn twin brother. The album returns to the southern United States, with references to Elvis and bluesmen such as Blind Lemon Jefferson. Tupelo is loosely based on a song by John Lee Hooker and is about Elvis's birthplace, mixed with images of the apocalypse. Wanted Man is an arrangement of a song by Bob Dylan and Johnny Cash, with a lyric of Cave's own.

Listening

Listening tip. Listen to Tupelo and notice the bluesy atmosphere and the imagery in the lyrics, from a birth to the end of time.
