Theatre of Pain

From HitStory, the pop encyclopedia of School of Rock · Work

Theatre of Pain is Mötley Crüe's third studio album, released on 21 June 1985. Recording began in January 1985 under a dark cloud: singer Vince Neil was on trial after a car accident in which Nicholas Dingley of Hanoi Rocks was killed, and bassist Nikki Sixx was struggling with a heroin addiction. Tom Werman produced again. The record marks the shift from the hard metal sound of Shout at the Devil to glam metal.

Smokin' in the Boys Room, a cover of Brownsville Station, gave the band its first top 20 hit. Home Sweet Home came about when Neil sang along to a piano lick that Tommy Lee played in the studio. The critics were negative and some band members do not think highly of it either, but the album reached number six on the American chart and went four times platinum.
