Rocks

From HitStory, the pop encyclopedia of School of Rock · Work

Rocks is Aerosmith's fourth studio album and was released on 13 May 1976 on Columbia. After the breakthrough with Toys in the Attic, the band, together with producer Jack Douglas, wanted to make a genuine hard rock record, as raw and live-sounding as possible. They drove the Record Plant's mobile recording truck into their rehearsal space and recorded almost all the basic tracks there. Guitarist Brad Whitford and Tom Hamilton contributed more to the writing than before.

Joe Perry wrote the opener Back in the Saddle on a six-string bass guitar. The riff falls outside the usual rock formula. The record produced three singles, of which Back in the Saddle and Last Child reached the top 40. AllMusic says the group sounds at its rawest and most rocking here. In 2020 Rolling Stone placed the record at number 366 among the greatest albums of all time, and Guns N' Roses, Metallica and Nirvana were influenced by it.

Listening tip. Listen to Back in the Saddle and notice the low, strange riff that Joe Perry came up with on a six-string bass.
