Shout at the Devil

From HitStory, the pop encyclopedia of School of Rock · Work

Shout at the Devil · The band's second album was released in September 1983 and became their breakthrough. Just before the recording, the group played five shows as the opening act for Kiss. During the sessions Nikki Sixx was in a serious car accident, after which he became addicted to painkillers and later to heroin. The pentagram on the sleeve came from the theatrical band Sister, in which Sixx had previously played with Blackie Lawless. Lawless gave him permission to use the imagery.

The album sold two hundred thousand copies in two weeks and made Mötley Crüe one of the best-selling metal bands of the 1980s. The singles Looks That Kill, Too Young to Fall in Love and Shout at the Devil were modest hits. The title and the pentagram earned the band a place in a TV item about Christian groups concerned about Satanism.

Listening

Listening tip. In the title song Shout at the Devil, listen to the chorus that you can shout along to, and notice how dark the song sounds.
