Vauxhall and I

From HitStory, the pop encyclopedia of School of Rock · Work

Vauxhall and I is Morrissey's fourth solo album and was released in March 1994 on Parlophone in Great Britain. Chris Dickie and Steve Lillywhite produced the record. The band consisted of Alain Whyte and Boz Boorer on guitar, Jonny Bridgewood on bass and Woodie Taylor on drums. In Spring-Heeled Jim, snippets of dialogue from a documentary about a youth club in south London can be heard. At the end of Billy Budd, a line from the 1948 film Oliver Twist is heard.

The record was a success. It reached the top of the British chart and made the top twenty in America. The first single, The More You Ignore Me, The Closer I Get, reached number 8 in Great Britain and became the only song by the singer or by The Smiths to chart high in America. Q magazine placed the record in the best ten of 1994. Pitchfork later called it his first truly mature solo record, and the NME his best.

Listening tip. Listen to Billy Budd and notice the line from an old film at the end of the song.
