Southpaw Grammar

From HitStory, the pop encyclopedia of School of Rock · Work

Southpaw Grammar was released on 28 August 1995 and is Morrissey's fifth solo album. It came out on RCA in the United Kingdom and on Reprise in the United States. Steve Lillywhite produced. The record sounds different from his earlier work: two tracks last more than ten minutes, The Operation opens with a drum solo of almost two and a half minutes by Spencer Cobrin, and there is a sample of a Shostakovich symphony. The sleeve features the boxer Kenny Lane.

AllMusic called it his art rock album, with strings, drum solos and two ten-minute tracks. The singles were Dagenham Dave and The Boy Racer. In the press the reception was mostly positive, but Q wrote that it would earn more respect than sales. Later some saw it as the moment when the general public turned away from him, whereas Stereogum called it his high point.
