Platinum

From HitStory, the pop encyclopedia of School of Rock · Work

Platinum was released on 23 November 1979 on Virgin Records and is Mike Oldfield's fifth studio album. For the first time, a record of his contains shorter songs and music by others. In the United States and Canada a modified version was released under the title Airborn.

The first side is a nineteen-minute title piece in four parts. Airborne later became the theme tune of the BBC children's quiz First Class. Charleston is a humorous piece with horns, wordless vocals and whispered scat. North Star/Platinum Finale contains a fragment of the composition North Star by Philip Glass: the choir comes from him, the melody does not. The second side has Punkadiddle, a parody of punk rock, and Gershwin's I Got Rhythm, reworked as a ballad. The Globe and Mail saw the music as a logical continuation of the material from Tubular Bells.

Listening

Listening tip. Listen to Charleston, Pt. Three: notice the horns and the wordless vocals, and hear how light and playful this section sounds after the more serious opening parts.
