Sterntaler

From HitStory, the pop encyclopedia of School of Rock · Work

Sterntaler is the second solo album by the German musician Michael Rother. It was recorded from September to November 1977, at his own studio in Forst and at Conny's Studio, and released in 1978 on Sky Records. As on his debut, he worked with Conny Plank, and Jaki Liebezeit of Can played drums.

Rother played almost everything himself: guitar, including Hawaiian slide guitar, piano, bass, vibraphone, synthesizer and strings. On a number of pieces, especially the title song, the synthesizer plays the main melody. Blauer Regen, by contrast, has no drums and sounds ambient. Sonnenrad was released together with Sterntaler on a single. Most critics reacted positively. Later Rother re-recorded Fontana di luna as Morning Sun, with the project Station 17.

Listening tip. Listen to Blauer Regen and notice how the music sounds without drums: what takes the place of the rhythm?
