St. Anger
From HitStory, the pop encyclopedia of School of Rock · Work
St. Anger · In January 2001 Metallica turned an old army barracks in San Francisco into a studio. Bassist Jason Newsted left shortly afterwards, so producer Bob Rock played the bass himself. In July 2001 James Hetfield entered a rehab clinic, as a result of which recording only resumed in 2002. Two filmmakers followed the band for the documentary Some Kind of Monster.
The result sounds raw. The guitars are tuned lower, the production has not been smoothed over and there are no guitar solos, because according to Kirk Hammett they sounded like an afterthought. The title song won a Grammy for Best Metal Performance in 2004. The record received mixed reviews, but did go straight to number 1 in the United States.
