Reload

From HitStory, the pop encyclopedia of School of Rock · Work

Reload was released on 18 November 1997, as the follow-up to Load. Both records come from the same sessions with producer Bob Rock at The Plant Studios in Sausalito, between May 1995 and February 1996. Metallica first thought of a double album, but with almost thirty tracks the band decided to split the material. Extra recording sessions followed in 1997. It is the last studio album with bassist Jason Newsted.

The sound stays far from the thrash metal of the past: hard rock with influences from blues, country and grunge. Kirk Hammett played rhythm guitar on one of the band's albums for the first time. Marianne Faithfull sings on The Memory Remains, the first guest female vocalist on a studio album by the band. The Unforgiven II is the first sequel to one of their own songs. The reviews were mixed: some praised the playing, others missed innovation.

Listening

Listening tip. Listen to Low Man's Lyric and notice the hurdy-gurdy and the violin, instruments you would not readily expect from a metal band.
