Death Magnetic

From HitStory, the pop encyclopedia of School of Rock · Work

Death Magnetic · After the raw St. Anger, Metallica chose a new producer: Rick Rubin. He had the band finish the songs almost completely first and then record them as if it were a live performance. Recording ran from March 2007 to May 2008 in studios around Los Angeles. Robert Trujillo played as bassist for the first time.

The album sounds like a return to the thrash metal of old, with more intricate compositions, standard guitar tuning and long solos by Kirk Hammett and James Hetfield. Suicide & Redemption is the first instrumental track since Orion from 1986. Critics saw a return to form, but found the production too heavily compressed. My Apocalypse won a Grammy for Best Metal Performance.

Listening tip. Listen to Suicide & Redemption and follow how the guitars do the work without a singer. Where do you hear a solo?
