A Chance to Cut Is a Chance to Cure

From HitStory, the pop encyclopedia of School of Rock · Work

A Chance to Cut Is a Chance to Cure is the fourth studio album by the American duo Matmos, released in 2001. Drew Daniel and Martin Schmidt both have doctors for parents, which presumably influenced the choice of theme. The album consists mainly of samples of medical procedures: plastic surgery, liposuction, hearing tests and bone saws. Despite the gravity of the material, the tone remains humorous.

The only exception is For Felix (and All the Rats), a piece for their late pet rat Felix, played entirely on his cage. The album has been called a concept album within glitch and musique concrète. AllMusic spoke of seven accessible, melodic pieces of experimental techno. Simon Reynolds wrote in Spin about the surrealism of the beauty industry. In 2017 Pitchfork placed it at number 19 on its list of the best IDM albums of all time.
