The Civil War

From HitStory, the pop encyclopedia of School of Rock · Work

The Civil War is the fifth studio album by the experimental duo Matmos and was released on Matador Records. It explores the boundary between Americana, medieval folk music and electronics. Striking is the large number of real instruments, such as drums, brass and guitars. A hurdy-gurdy is also sampled, and the piece The Stars and Stripes Forever receives a satirical treatment.

The title fits the contrasts in the music. AllMusic gave the album 4.5 out of 5 stars and spoke of a title that reflects the inner contradictions of the sound. Pitchfork called it the group's best work, both as a technical achievement and as pure sound. On Metacritic the album scored 77 points based on 22 reviews, indicating generally favourable reviews.
