Quasi-Objects

From HitStory, the pop encyclopedia of School of Rock · Work

Quasi-Objects was released in 1998 as the follow-up to Matmos's self-titled debut. The duo built the music from ordinary sounds that it recorded in and around its own home. Drew Daniel and M.C. Schmidt used, among other things, latex clothing, balloons, a whoopee cushion and sounds from their own bodies, alongside banjo, electric guitar, sampler and synthesizers. Schmidt also made the illustration on the sleeve.

The record thus continued along the path set by the debut: experimental electronic music made from everyday sounds. The reception was mixed. AllMusic found the album both an improvement and a disappointment, because the idea of making tracks from strange sounds took over. Pitchfork found the record too dependent on its gimmicky premise.

Listening

Listening tip. Listen to Latex and notice which everyday sounds you recognise among the electronic textures.
