Matmos
From HitStory, the pop encyclopedia of School of Rock · Work
This is the debut album by the American duo Matmos, released in 1997. The music is experimental and electronic, with influences from drum and bass, minimal techno and glitch. What makes the record special is the material the duo worked with: field recordings of everyday actions and of unusual sound sources. On Verber: Amplified Synapse, for instance, you can hear the nerve activity of a crayfish.
The eleven tracks range from short sketches to longer pieces, with titles such as Plastic Minor, Lunaire and Office Furniture (After Evidence). With this approach, turning everyday sounds into electronic music, Matmos laid the foundation for the work the duo would go on to make. On the next album, Quasi-Objects from 1998, the duo continued along the same path.
