Midnight Love
From HitStory, the pop encyclopedia of School of Rock · Work
Midnight Love · Marvin Gaye was angry about how Motown had released his album In Our Lifetime and wanted never to record there again. In early 1981 he moved to the Belgian town of Ostend, where the concert promoter Freddy Cousaert helped him kick his drug habit. There he prepared his comeback, with a new band. He began work on the new album in December 1981 in Brussels. On 23 March 1982 he signed with Columbia. He wanted to make more mainstream music: 'I need a hit,' he said.
Midnight Love was released on 8 November 1982, the last album to appear in his lifetime. It was an immediate international success and produced the hit Sexual Healing, which won two Grammys. The album was nominated for a Grammy and was named Album of the Year for 1982 by the NME. Rolling Stone placed it at number 37 among the best albums of the 1980s.
