Sailing to Philadelphia

From HitStory, the pop encyclopedia of School of Rock · Work

Sailing to Philadelphia · On his second solo album, released in September 2000, Mark Knopfler brought in guest singers. James Taylor and Van Morrison sing along, as do Chris Difford and Glenn Tilbrook of Squeeze on one version of the album. For seventeen years Knopfler had mainly made soundtracks and roots projects.

The title song comes from the novel Mason & Dixon by Thomas Pynchon, about the two English surveyors who drew the border between Pennsylvania and Maryland in the 1760s. Taylor sings that duet. In The Last Laugh, Morrison trades lines with Knopfler. Rolling Stone called the record a welcome look back at the best period of Dire Straits. By 2002 it had sold more than 3.5 million copies.
