Golden Heart
From HitStory, the pop encyclopedia of School of Rock · Work
Golden Heart · After the last Dire Straits tour in 1992, Mark Knopfler put an end to the band. A world tour with 7.1 million visitors had placed a heavy strain on his work and private life, and he said that such a scale is dehumanising. He recovered for two years and in 1994 began work on his first solo record, which appeared in 1996.
The album draws on the musical influences of his whole career, with an acoustic bass, string arrangements and traditional Irish accompaniment. Darling Pretty was the first single and featured in the film Twister. In sound and structure, Cannibals strongly resembles the Dire Straits song Walk of Life. AllMusic found the record listenable but second-hand: Knopfler was said not to have challenged himself.
