Cal
From HitStory, the pop encyclopedia of School of Rock · Work
Cal is Mark Knopfler's second soundtrack album and was released on 24 August 1984. The music accompanies the film Cal from the same year, directed by Pat O'Connor and produced by David Puttnam. Puttnam also produced Local Hero from 1983, the film for which the guitarist had previously written music.
All the music is by him. In The New York Times, Janet Maslin called the record an exceptionally beautiful and haunting score. AllMusic later described it as a quiet, thoughtful series of pieces that does not seek false drama but supports the story. In 2013 he played Father and Son on tour as an instrumental introduction to Hill Farmer's Blues, which shows that the music stayed with him for a long time.
