Erotica

From HitStory, the pop encyclopedia of School of Rock · Work

Erotica was released on 19 October 1992, at the same time as Sex, Madonna's first book, and it was her first release on her own company, Maverick. For the record she worked once more with Shep Pettibone, known for Vogue, and with André Betts. Pettibone made the music, and Madonna wrote melodies and lyrics. Recording began in the autumn of 1991. The title track was recorded four times, and Fever was added only right at the end, when she began singing the old classic.

The album is about sex and love in the age of AIDS, and touches on themes such as sadomasochism and homophobia. It sounds different from her 1980s pop sound, drawing on hip hop, R&B, house and techno. She wrote In This Life in fifteen minutes, about a friend who had died. The first reactions were mixed, partly because of the uproar surrounding the book. Later, many critics came to rate the record more highly, and it has been cited as an influence on other female singers.
